Development of metallurgy and environmental problems

The impact of metallurgy on the environment today is impossible to deny Рecological issues are tormenting the minds not only of scientists and politicians, but also ordinary people. The work of metallurgical companies has a negative impact on the environment in general and its components in particular. This is due to the multifactorial air and water pollution that inevitably occurs during the processing of metals. Machinery removals helps to solve the problem.

Air pollution
Harmful substances get into the air together with the products of blast-furnace fuel combustion, as well as a result of charge materials processing. Depending on which additives are used in the charging process as part of the complete production cycle, the air receives:

Hydrogen sulfide;
Sulfur dioxide;
Graphite dust;
Carbon dioxide;
Lead, tin, antimony, arsenic, etc.
These emissions are detrimental to the health of people who breathe the air, the condition of wildlife and fauna. The release of nitrogen, sulfur and carbon against the background of precipitation led to the emergence of the term “acid rain”. It is destructive not only to the living world, but even to architectural structures and cultural monuments.

Water contamination
One of the main problems in non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy is high water consumption. In this regard, the geolocation of enterprises is designed for the nearest location of rivers, seas or other bodies of water. In the absence of such, it is necessary to erect special hydraulic structures. For the operation of the enterprise, water is first withdrawn and then discharged after the production cycle. Together with the waste water, all sorts of chemical compounds get into water bodies. This leads to total contamination of drinking water sources in the areas adjacent to the smelter, not only on the surface, but also at a considerable depth. As a result, the mortality rate increases, life expectancy decreases, and the percentage of cancer and other serious diseases increases.

The above factors lead to “systematic” pollution of the environment. Against this background, one should not discount emergency situations, when an abnormal situation is characterized by even more global emissions. Given the depreciation of fixed assets at most metallurgical plants, and the reluctance of their owners to spend on modernization and equipment of effective purification systems, it is reasonable to assume that the number of accidents will only increase every year.

In this regard, the maintenance of environmental safety is one of the priority positions in the program of sustainable development of the country. It is hard to overestimate the consequences of pollution of the biosphere – in the spring of 2021 the flag of the North Pole went under the water for the first time, this is probably one of the most alarming calls to pay attention to.

Conclusion
To reduce the negative impact of metallurgy on the environment, it is important to replace outdated methods of metal processing with modern ones. If in the Soviet times the man tried to subdue the nature, to become its master and domesticate it like a cow, now it has become obvious that this way brings nothing but destruction. Man is also part of the biosphere, so he must apply methods that will not affect its coherent and harmonious work. That is why it is so necessary to develop environmentally friendly technologies that will not only benefit people, but also safety for the surrounding world.
